About This Spot

Stepping up to El Califa de León feels like slipping into a beloved neighborhood ritual—unpretentious yet deeply satisfying. The quiet buzz of anticipation fills the modest space, where the pace slows to match the deliberate craftsmanship behind every taco. This is not a place to rush, but one to savor the rhythm of waiting in line, exchanging nods with fellow diners, and catching the scent of freshly made corn tortillas warming just ahead of your order.

The intimate setting—with its standing-room-only layout and close quarters—creates a uniquely communal atmosphere. It’s a humble stage for a culinary craft so well-honed that the simplicity of fresh, richly flavored meats meets the subtle brilliance of house-made salsas. Choices like tender bistek and costilla arrive paired with salsa verde or roja, each bite a quiet celebration of texture and spice, held in the warm embrace of tortilla made to order.

Here, the sauces aren’t mere condiments but invitations to explore layered flavors, encouraging you to customize each taco to your own taste. Whether you lean into the mild tang of salsa verde or the deeper kick of the roja, every mouthful feels like part of an unfolding story—a shared local secret that unfolds slowly but surely.

The experience at El Califa de León is defined by its unassuming charm and the joy found in simple authenticity. It’s a place where the finest ingredients and time-honored techniques transform a quick bite into a small sensory journey. The surrounding neighborhood’s hum, the fragments of conversation, and the occasional clink from the nearby sink for washing hands quietly underscore the human moments behind this taco tradition.

In a city brimming with dining options, El Califa de León invites you to slow down and witness the quiet artistry behind every carefully assembled taco. It’s a reminder that some of the most memorable meals come not from grandeur but from warm, shared spaces where food connects people—plain, delicious, and wholly genuine.

Don’t overthink it! The tacos here are delicious. It is a tiny spot and the seats are in the shop next door. The meat is tasty and the sauces (specially the green one) are delicious. I really like the Costilla ones which come 2x1 when you order them. A fun taco experience

Bob Dylan once sang, “We live in a political world Love don't have any place We're living in times Where men commit crimes And crime don't have any face” Was he thinking about El Califa de Leon? I don’t think so, but those lyrics might have been churning in my head as I stood in line on the afternoon of June 21, 2025, awaiting the wonderful bistek tacos. Unfortunately, since receiving a Michelin star, everyone has extra opinions about this taqueria that have nothing to do with the delicious tacos. I leave it to you, dear reader, to decide the merits of the case before us. I will say this: the line was long, the tacos were delicious, and there was seating at the next door clothing shop for a small donation. The condiments, the mole & salsa, were on point. The crowd, mostly Mexican, were all happy and in the moment. Mexico City has an amazing food. This taqueria is a great option and very representative of the riches that CDMX food has to offer. Go and seek tacos!

Went to El Califa de Leon to grab a quick dinner around 7pm on a Thursday. The place is close to San Cosme metro station. They proudly display their Michelin stars. It's a very small and packed space. You order at the back first and pay. There's standing room only for maybe 5 people. There's a little sink where you can wash your hands. They have some drinks in the refrigerator. I had one bisteak taco just to try and didn't really like it. I mean it was good but not outstanding, nothing very different from other restaurants or street side vendors in Mexico City. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit just because they have a Michelin star. They provide some green spicy salsa, and a chutney-like black non-spicy one - these are in common dishes for everyone to use. The tacos are prepared on the spot, and the meat is also cooked right in front of you.

They truly deserve their Michelin star ,and now I know exactly why. These tacos are incredibly simple yet bursting with unforgettable flavor. The sauces are delicious, but honestly, you can enjoy the tacos with or without them: plain, with lime, with salsa… any way you choose, they’re amazing. The tortillas are freshly made right when you order, which takes everything to the next level. And honestly, the service also deserves a Michelin star haha, they are amazing, attentive, and make the whole experience even better. If you’re visiting Mexico City, make sure you take a moment to stop by this spot. It’s absolutely worth it.

Don’t listen to the nerds who barely put salsa on their tacos giving this 3 stars.. This is Michelin star worthy!! And worth going out of your way and waiting in line. Tan Ricos aun con las expectativas altas.

This place is a classic-simple tacos, 4 items on the menu. It tastes like eating tacos in el DF twenty years ago--in the best way possible. The meat quality is great, and each element of the tacos is just right--the salsas are fresh, flavorful, and spicy. The tortillas are made fresh right in front of you. We went for the gaonera and the bistec--and had to go back for a second round of both--just that good. Obviously not as cheap as it used to be, given all the hype, but the taste and quality are still there, and it's not out of line with the general inflation of taco prices. The service is friendly and efficient. There are tables in the small clothing shop next door. Cash only.
